New Year, Old You – but a thriving You

01/14/2025 Lee Tan

When I first heard the “Survive till 2025” (say it out loud to hear the rhyme) for the first time in 2024 from a recruitment agent – I was immediately thinking, I don’t want to just survive – but thrive. 2025 will be a great year to do so! It’ll be 5 years since “you know what“ and I would love to hear from you if any resonates with you.

Here’s how I am going to thrive:

  1. Time to have a hobby

I noticed mid last year I had started to develop an undesirable habit of scrolling on my phone while watching Netflix and was curious to replace my phone with knitting needles – and not a day goes by without knitting since then. I have found my next new love and not only is it good for my cognition, hand eye co-ordination, mental health, problem solving skills, creative skills, I end up with timeless knitwear that is mindfully created. Knitting is a time honoured craft that is making a comeback – will you give it a try?

  1. Happiness = Reality – Expectations

Gratitude/Delight has really helped me through yet another difficult trading year with economic uncertainty, with all the business targets out of the window. I am delighted with how hard our team members work to look after our clients, how dedicated our instructors are, how supportive our suppliers have been and the trust that you have in us. I have learnt to be grateful and take delights in what reality brings and reduce my expectations and really enjoy this process/journey that we are all on.

  1. Rest & Recovery – when resting – are you recovering well?

I have always been a good sleeper – falling asleep quickly and waking up the same time every morning – sometimes feeling refreshed, sometime not. It wasn't till I wore a Firstbeat Device that I discovered my sleep quality is not as good as I thought. By reducing screen exposure 1-2 hours before, taking Magnesium Glycinate, exposing to morning light / red light therapy and reducing my body temperature made a huge difference to my sleep score.

Some health experts think sleep is the most important pillar of health and the hardest to get right and affects the rest of the pillars impacting how you move, eat, connect and think.

  1. Intentions

I am fortunate to spend 3.5 weeks in UK and Europe before Christmas with my family and realising on the flight home I was looking at my photo stream I didn't take that many photos. I had set the intentions to be mindful and present and to soak in the Northern Hemisphere Christmas, and it dawned on me how distracting our phones are. I have seen many tourists snapping away at original Van Gogh paintings and not even stopping to admire the brushstrokes/ colour composition etc.

When the opportunity came in Helsinki to take a dip in the 4 deg Baltic Sea – I did just that – twice. I have always felt the cold (typing this article with cold fingers) and am so proud that I stayed true to my intentions. Interestingly coming out from the steam saunas I did not feel the 0 degree air temperature and definitely felt the cold sea water which I had the pleasure of soaking for 20 seconds only! Still buzzing from that contrast experience in the country where saunas originate from.

  1. Vibe – love who you are

You don't have to be someone new – you are enough as you are right now.

Here’s some tips on checking in on you

  • Take stock of what you’ve achieved this year (internally & externally) and reflect on how far you’ve come.
  • Describe what values guided you in the past year.
  • What you’re grateful for helps bring your attention to the abundance in your life

6) Emphasis on YOU

Now that we have processed on the internal and fine tuned the physical you – it's time to think about what prioritizing YOU looks like. I don't mean the odd massage here and there – what does real self care look like? What fills your cup and what drains your battery? What boundaries do you have to draw for that to happen?

Why not join me in January just to Rest & Reset – to metabolise the past 12 months? Give yourself the gift of time to reflect, to connect to self and there is no rush.... I promise! Details coming soon for our Thrive in 2025 Workshop
